Our Lady of Fatima, sent from above,
appeared to three children to tell of God's love:

1. In Fatima's cova on the thirteenth of May;
the Virgin Maria appeared at mid-day.

Refrain: Ave, Ave, Ave Maria!  Ave, Ave, Ave Maria!

2. The Virgin Maria surrounded by light;
God's Mother is ours for she gives us this sight.

3. The world was then suffering from war, plague, and strife,
and Portugal mourned for her great loss of life.

4. To three shepherd children the Virgin then spoke
a message so hopeful, with peace for all folk.

5. With sweet Mother's pleading, she asked us to pray,
do penance, be modest, the Rosary each day.

6. All Portugal heard what God's Mother did say,
converted it sings of that Queen to this day.

7. We all must remember Our Lady's request,
do all that she asks for, obey her bequests.

8. She warned of behavior from which we must turn,
of thoughts, words, and actions which Christians must spurn.

9. To her sad, sweet pleading our promise is made,
that God's Law in all things be strongly obeyed.

10. From nation to nation her fair name is praised,
as souls from sin's bondage are contritely raised.

11. Our thanks to the Godhead, whose ways are so sure,
for giving us Mary, our Mother Most Pure.

12. Our hearts, overflowing with kindness and love,
thank her for God's graces bestowed from above.

13. Hail, Refuge of sinners! Hail, Star of the Sea!
Hail, Queen of Creation! Our hope is in thee.

14. All hail, Virgin Mary! This Star guides our way,
our country's Protectress, America's Way!

                                                                                                                              Divine Mercy Sunday

Dear Parents of First Communicants:

Happy Easter! May our Risen Lord bless your family in a very special way.

We are 13 days away from First Holy Communion. What an exciting days these are especially for the children. They are to meet, to hold in their hands, to welcome in their hearts, The One, no other than God Himself, Jesus. It is so awesome for our human existence to fully understand. There can’t be greater day than First Communion!

Please help your child comprehend the immensity of the moment. Not so much intellectually but with the strength of faith. This requires that you yourself approach the event with all your faith, with all your heart-deep devotion to Jesus. Invite your child and the whole family to prayerfully prepare for May 15, 2011.  Your child’s belief and faith is dependant on yours. This is your best teachable moment as Christian Parents, a life-learning opportunity for your child.

I am sure that Eucharistic banners are coming along beautifully. In preparation for First Holy communion I would like to remind everyone of the up coming First Communion Retreat. The retreat is on Wednesday, May 11 from 9:00-12:00 noon. At least one parent is required to be present. Your child can come with you at 9:00; they do not have to be here at 7:45, they may come in free dress.

FAITH ITEMS THAT FIRST COMMUNICANT NEED TO KNOW

                   1. In the Eucharistic Bread and Wine is the
TRUE and REAL BODY AND BLOOD of Jesus.
This occurs after the priest blesses the offering gifts of bread and wine with the same Words Jesus said at the Last Supper:

“ This is my Body take and eat
“This is my Blood take and drink…”

It is the same Jesus, God the Son that your child is receiving in communion.

                     2. The proper disposition in receiving the Eucharist is a heart and soul free of serious sins.

                     3. There is one hour of fasting before communion (this includes gums and candies).

                     4. The Holy Eucharist is received and eaten right on the spot.

                     5. Children are to say their adoration prayers after receiving Jesus. And must remain reverent,

acknowledging Jesus PRESENCE all through the duration of the celebration,
and after Mass Jesus’ Presence in the Tabernacle.

                     6.  Children are to continue to nurture their personal relation with Jesus, the God that they will receive.

Parents, they need your assistance on this, their spiritual growth.
(This can be achieved by saying prayer during the events of the day:
                                    morning rising, during meals, and before going to bed; frequent reading the Bible;
Discussing Mass readings and homily; establishing family prayer time)

                     7. Children need to be faithful in participating in weekend Mass and going to confession regularly.

Do not iron the veil If it still crumpled on Saturday,
hung it in the bathroom and let hot shower runs. The steam from the shower should strengthen crest out.

o   When putting the veil on, affixed it with bobby-pins. The elastic might cause discomfort for the girls.

January 23, 2011
We are now toward the end of January, and I am still caught up with the so-many-things to do for the new year.  Let me greet each one a very Happy and Blessed, Prosperous 2011.  Our second graders too are now a year older we all are and thus facing new and challenging learning.  Since we came back from the Christmas break, the second graders were leaders of the morning exercise with the Pledge Allegiance, the prayer, and a short write up on the saint of the day. They were reading unfamiliar and difficult words, and sometimes called right on the spot to cover for absent classmates, yet they did very well!  I am overly proud of their performance.

On January 31- February 4, we will celebrate Catholic Schools Week. At last Wednesday’s meeting we teachers were informed that each class is to have a project that will be raffled or auctioned off during the celebration. Grade 2 is making a quilt with their picture and favorite words. It is kind of a rush and the children have so little time to really relish the experience, it is still, however, learning experience for them.  Each one designed a square with picture and words using the computer. I am convinced that something precious will come out because it is of the children and for the children. Also in conjunction with the Catholic Schools Week celebration, second graders are to bring deodorants. First grade and Kindergarteners are bringing other items. Our academy will prepare personal-items packages for persons in the military services.

In math we are now into addition and subtraction with regrouping, (the old “carrying over and borrowing”) and just lately multiplication and fractions. In science we are studying light and energy. You probably figured it out when children started searching for flashlights. In social studies we are still studying various cultures that are around us.  We read about the immigrants traveling through the Ellis Island. Students are also now learning the map of the United States. In reading children are learning compound words and therefore, longer and harder words. In religion we are now tackling the most important lesson of all, their preparation for First Holy Communion.

Children already know how to go to Confession. Each one of them has to keep reviewing the steps of Confession, in order not to forget them for March 16, the day of the First Sacrament of Confession.

Let us do our part and daily pray with the children, talk to them about Jesus who they will be receiving.  Let us resolve to participate in every Sunday Mass.  This is the Best Gift and the best preparation we can give to them!

JUST A FEW DETAILS for all children receiving First Holy Communion. The following is the dress code for First Communion

December 10, 2010

Dear Parents,

We are now onto the second week of Advent, and Christmas will be here soon. The second graders are learning about Advent the “COMING” of Jesus as our Infant Savior. For them this Advent takes an additional meaning – they are also preparing for Jesus’ special coming into their hearts in the Eucharist, their first communion.

As Mary carried Jesus in her womb, they too will carry Him in their hearts – so please when talking to them about their getting ready for Christmas include also a discussion on ways they can prepare for their first Holy Communion. This includes knowing and following the Ten Commandments; the works of mercy; and the concepts and process of the Sacrament of Penance.

Discussing Christmas activity with them, instead of giving gifts to each other, it was agreed that we bring “gifts” that will help Mary keep the Infant Savior warm at the time of His birth; small items such as baby blanket, towels and like. These then will be given to the nearest pregnancy help-center for the most needy newborn baby boy. He will be our “Baby Jesus” of today, born in dire need, in our human poverty.

We will of course, have our Christmas party, come Friday, December 17, 2010. Please let our classroom parent, Gilbert Leal, know what you will bring so as to avoid duplication of needed items. The party will start at 10:00 Am with games, singing of Christmas carols and then lunch at 11:00 AM.  Parents are welcome to join us in games, singing, and party.

FYI

Dec. 16, 2010, at 7:00 Pm is the Grand Advent Service for the whole school in church.  On the same day at 5:30 PM, St. Elisabeth School is honoring its benefactors and donors with a small party in room 9, prior to the Advent service. Mrs. Martin requested that second grade offer a singing presentation of Christmas songs. This is an honor and a great way to showcase the children’s talents. This means a lot to the children and to the school. Please mark your calendar and bring the children that evening.

Thanks and God bless you.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. I will keep you all in my prayers and I would like to let you know that I count each of my student a blessing to thank God for this holiday. That of course includes their family.

Today second graders celebrated their ancestors with presentations of their interview. Each one did a wonderful job and sharing the wonderful "treasures" they found in interviewing parents and relatives. I know that these were added notches to their gratitude and appreciation of loved ones. A true blessing to thank God for.

And the FOOD were just delicious and abundant. It was a true FEAST and I thank all the parents for their generosity.

We now are moving on to Advent, a new year in the Church's calendar, an exciting season for the children as they prepare for the birthday of Jesus. Please be on the look out for activities that the students will be involved in.

Once again, Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your family.

Sister Marita, fdz

November 10, 2010
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for attending our Parent/Teacher Conferences!  I was very happy to spend the few minutes with you. I enjoy my time with your children and I am honored to know their wonderful parents. They are all great children, each and every one of them, I treasure the opportunity to teach them and be able to influence their life this year.
First quarter is over and each student showed great strides in their learning. I am excited with them in their discovery of new learning and in growing in what they already know.
Just thinking ahead, I would like to mention some of the things that we will be doing. Grade 2 has just started a reading spree for the month of November. Students will receive a Pizza Hut certificate for every ten books read. Students are encouraged to read a book a day and to write a short report about it. The report should include the title of the book, the author (and illustrator), a sentence about the beginning, a sentenced about the middle, and a sentence about the ending. They may use the words: First, next, then, and finally, or similar sequencing words. The report should conclude with their opinion about the book, stating how he/she likes the story or the lesson learned from the story.
Today we started writing poems with rhyming lines.  Students chose their own title, they will write three-versed poem; each verse is a pair of rhyming lines. This is a work in progress.
Today also, second grade class is requested to provide some songs as entertainment for the St. Elisabeth feast day luncheon, on Sunday, November 21. Students are expected to attend the Sunday school Mass at 11:00 AM and the luncheon follows. Second graders love to sing and this is their occasion to showcase their talents. Please support us on this. We would like to invite all the family, extended family to come. You will be very proud of the children. Tickets for the luncheon were sent home last week. Tickets will not be sold on Sunday. It will be a beautiful Mass and a scrumptious lunch. Children must attend the Mass in full uniform.

For Social Studies we will be studying immigrant heritage in the United States. Students will be interviewing parents and grandparents about their family heritage. The lessons will culminate on Tuesday, November 23, when they will be reporting in class. Please provide the students with pictures, objects, or even food, from their family heritage to show and share with the class. Parents are invited to come and watch the reports. Your children will be so proud in sharing their heritage.

In science we are studying plants and seeds. Students will be asked to bring a sample of seeds to show and observe in the class. If you have any unique seed or picture of a plant or tree, please have it ready for that part of the unit. Anything unusual can add excitement to the lesson on plants.

Students did not have homework today, however, they will have a spelling test on Friday so remind them to study the words.

Enjoy the tomorrow’s day off
God bless you and yours!
